About Jessica

I was born in Salem, Oregon and grew up on the coast in the “Banana Belt” of Oregon in Brookings, Oregon from age two. I grew up being involved in growing plants and headed to Oregon State University to study Horticulture when I graduated from high school.

I obtained a B.S. in Science (Horticulture) and a minor in integrated pest management. I also spent a year on an exchange program at Lincoln University in New Zealand. After graduation, I worked a season or two at Croft Vineyards as a vineyard worker and tractor driver. I became interested in wine grapes and decided to pursue a M.S with winegrapes. I ended up working with ‘Marion’ trailing blackberry physiology and cold hardiness instead of grapes, again at OSU. After graduation I spent a few years working in the natural products/medicinal herb industry as a farm manager. In 2000, I got involved with winegrapes again as the OSU Viticulture Research Assistant.

In 2002, I decided to go back to school one more time and made sure to work with wine grapes this time around! While I thought about doing my Ph.D. in New Zealand or at Davis, I had the chance to work with Dr. James Kennedy (natural products chemist) on phenolic compounds in the Food Science and Technology Dept. at OSU (I know I know!) where I did research on the influence of vine vigor on fruit and wine phenolic chemistry. My goal was to gain an understanding about the relationships between the vineyard and the resulting fruit and wines. This was fascinating in seeing the large impact the site environment and vine microclimate can have on the accumulation of phenolic compounds and the differences in the wines.

My goal is to use my passion for growing grapes and wine and my understanding of the relationships between the vineyard and fruit and wine chemistry to assist you in producing the fruit and wines you desire. I welcome the opportunity to earn your trust and deliver you the best service possible to assist you in achieving your goals.
